PE or polyethylene is a tough material and inert in nature. So it does not get damaged by the aggressive condition of the soil around. These pipes are quite lightweight and can be handled easily. They can also be transported easily from one place to another, and the installation process is also quite smooth. EPD or electromagnetic pipe detection system is used to locate tracer pipes. Generally, an EPD utilises a transmitter to generate a signal, which is then received by a receiver. For signal transmission, a conducting material is needed. And hence HDPE water supply pipes come equipped with a tracer wire as well. These wires can easily withstand the destructive and corrosive effects of underground usage. These wires are used to detect different buried utilities.
Generally, a 12 SWG copper wire and a PE jacket are used over the HDPE water supply pipes. During the process of installation, the tracer wire is brought closer to different access points such as pump stations, valve boxes, pressure reducer stations and so on. There are splices on tracer wires which need to be connected via compression type connector or split bolts. Once it is installed, the wire will further go through tests so as to ensure that it is working fine. For this purpose, a transmission is attached to the wire near the access point. Further, the transmitter emits a specific frequency signal into the tracer wire. On the other hand, a detector is tuned using the same frequency and is moved near the ground surface. This process thus helps in detecting the location of underground pipes.
